Frequently Asked Questions about Houston Alimony Arrangements

Having been a Houston alimony attorney for many years, John K. Grubb often receives the same general questions about spousal support from his clients. He has compiled the most frequently asked questions below. If you have questions about your specific case and you need to speak with Houston spousal support attorneys, please contact our law firm today to get help.

When am I entitled to alimony?

Alimony amounts and durations are decided upon by the courts based on the financial situation of each spouse. While women used to always be the recipient, that is not always the case anymore, nor is it guaranteed that one spouse will receive spousal support. Courts look at each spouse’s ability to work, the future earnings of the spouses, child custody, marriage length, and more. In essence, it really just depends on your financial situation and the kind of job that you can get after the marriage ends.

What are the different types of alimony?

There are four main types of alimony: rehabilitative, permanent, reimbursement, and limited duration alimony. Rehabilitative alimony is designed to get the spouse back on his or her feet, such as by going back to school. Permanent alimony is paid over a long period of time though the amount changes as either spouse’s circumstances change. Reimbursement alimony applies when one spouse supported another through school and expected to benefit from the fruits of the additional earnings. Limited duration alimony is provided for a specific period of time though the amount can chance as one of the spouse’s circumstances change. You can read more about the types of alimony following the hyperlink to that section of our website.

How can spousal support be terminated?

The two most common reasons that alimony is terminated is because of the death of one of the spouse’s or because the receiving spouse remarries. However, alimony payment amounts and duration can be changed as other circumstances change, such as the paying spouse losing his or her job or the receiving spouse substantially increases his or her income.

When speaking with Houston alimony lawyers about your particular situation, make sure to ask questions if things do not make sense to you. The general answers above may not be applicable to your particular situation; however, our Houston alimony Attorneys Online, Inc would be happy to answer your questions specifically.
